Scouting Camporee is May 15-17

The annual diocesan Catholic Scouting Camporee will take place from Friday, May 15, to Sunday, May 17, on the grounds of Somerset St. Joseph Church, the oldest Catholic church in Ohio.

The theme will be “Saints, Angels and Heroes.” The diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting is inviting all Boy and Girl Scouts, Venture crew and Camp Fire members, youth ministers, and adults who work with young people, whether in Scouting or not, to attend.

Two programs will be available: a day program on Saturday for 8- to 10-year-olds, and a weekend program for those 11 to 18. All participants will be in groups with others of similar age. The weekend will fulfill the retreat requirement for the Boy Scout Ad Altare Dei award.

There also will be a lay apostolate formation program, designed to help Scouters be more comfortable with and better trust each other. Through guided reflection and active participation, Scouters will discern how they are called by Christ and his church to leadership, holiness, conversion, and worship.

The process helps participants recognize the prompting of the Holy Spirit within a small community of faith. It also emphasizes Scouting’s role as youth ministry and provides an example of the 12th point of the Boy Scout Law, “A Scout is reverent.”

The weekend will include Mass with Bishop Frederick Campbell, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, music by the group Station 14, games, crafts, and skits.

Participants will need to bring their own tents, sleeping gear, and cups. All other dining utensils will be supplied. Provisional camping is available with early registration.
