June 2008

June 22-28 -- Foreclosure Prevention Week

The diocesan Office for Social Concerns has joined with the Columbus Housing Partnership and other faith communities in central Ohio to build awareness about our community's foreclosure crisis and to promote programs that help those in need of assistance.  CHP has designated Foreclosure Prevention Week for June 22-28.  Promotion materials are available from the Office for Social Concerns at (614) 241-2540.


July 2008

July 20-25 - Social Action Summer Institute, Atlanta

The national Social Action Summer Institute will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 20-25, 2008.  Speakers include Rev. July 25-27 -- Life, Justice, and Family Convocation, Cherry Hill, NJ

August 13 -- NCPD Webinar on U.S. Bishop's Pastoral Statement on People with Disabilities

On August 13, 2008, the National Catholic Partnership on Disability will highlight have an online webinar "The Bishops Pastoral Statement on People with Disabilities at 30:  Bright Past, Bold Future."  The webinar is from 1-2 p.m. and is free to those in the Diocese of Columbus since the diocese is an affiliate member of NCPD.  For more information, go to

September 1 -- Labor Day

The 2008 Labor Day Statement by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Domestic Policy Committee is available online. September 4, 5, 6 -- Disability Conference, Huron, Ohio

The National Apostolate for Inclusion Ministry, an organization which promotes the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the life of the Church, will host a conference on September 4-6, 2008 at the Sawmill Creek Resort & Conference Center in Huron, Ohio.  Topics of the conference include the parish as a welcoming community, education, sacramental preparation, children with autism, and family support.  For more information, visit NAfIM's website at www.nafim.org or call Kitty Kruse at (800) 884-9580.

September 12 -- Growing Season:  The Life of a Migrant Community - A photo Exhibit

September 26 - Breakfast with the Bishop - Catholic Social Services

October 5-11 - Mental Illness Awareness Week

Mental Illness Awareness Week is October 5-11, 2008. The NCPD Council on Mental Illness, an outreach program of the National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) is encouraging Catholic observance of Mental Illness Awareness Sunday, October 5, 2007. This national effort is designed to promote pastoral sensitivity to, and inclusion of, individuals and their family members who are affected by mental illness. It is an opportunity for parishes to raise awareness about this important issue, to educate Catholics about mental illness, and to help reduce the unfortunate stigma often associated with mental illness. October 7 - Life Chain 2008
 
Life Chain is a one hour "prayer chain" in witness to an end of abortion in our nation.  Life Chain will take place on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at the Statehouse, Columbus.  At 4:15 p.m., people will gather at the McKinley Monument (High Street side) where you can choose an 18 x 22 inch sign with a pro-life message on it which you can hold during this silent protest.  The silent one-hour witness begins at 4:30.  Several prayers are on the reverse side of the signs which can be spoken silently during the one-hour witness.  All ages are encouraged and welcome to attend.  The event is sponsored by Greater Columbus Right to Life.  For more information, email grtlife@gmail.com.

A Children's Holy Field Trip will be held on Monday, October 13th, at St. Michael Church, 5750 N. The annual collection for diocesan Catholic Charities will be taken up on Christmas Day, December 25. This collection allows the diocese to meet a variety of basic needs directly and through diocesan agencies and organizations including J.O.I.N., St. Stephen's Community House, Catholic Social Services, St. Lawrence Haven, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. You can help share in this important work by generously supporting the Catholic Charities collection this year.

January is Poverty Awareness Month

January 8 - Urban Plunge Reception - University of Notre Dame Alumni

Alumni of the University of Notre Dame are invited to the Urban Plunge reception on Thursday, January 8.  The reception marks the conclusion of the 48-hour Urban Plunge in Columbus for students of the University of Notre Dame.  Students who participate in this inner-city immersion experience visit homeless individuals and families in shelters and camps, feed the hungry at soup kitchens, food pantries and by meals-on-wheels, and volunteer at Catholic Charities agencies.  Alumni from the University of Notre Dame are invited to the 5:15 p.m. Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral and reception with the students following Mass in the first floor conference room at the Catholic Center, 197 E. January 22 -- Respect Life Mass -- Day of Penance and Prayer

The Most Rev. Frederick F. Campbell, Bishop of Columbus, will be celebrant at Mass on Thursday, January 22, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral, 212 E. Broad Street, Columbus, in observance of the "day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life." This day of penance and prayer falls on the anniversary of the January 22, 1973, U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion. All are invited to attend. Lent 2009 - Operation Rice Bowl

As part of our faith community's Lenten observance, many parishes participate in Catholic Relief Services' Lenten program, Operation Rice Bowl. For 33 years, Operation Rice Bowl has inspired Catholics in the United States to pray, fast, learn, and give to increase their understanding of our global community throughout our Lenten journey. Family Operation Rice Bowl calendars and “bowl banks” are sent directly to the parishes. Additional materials may be obtained from the diocesan Office for Social Concerns at (614) 241-2540. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl at home with their families and loved ones.

February 14 - Diocesan Respect Life Conference

The annual Diocesan Respect Life Conference will be at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1899 McCoy Road, Columbus, on Saturday, February 14, 2009.  Fr. February 22 - 25 -- Catholic Social Ministry Gathering

The Catholic Social Ministry Gathering, to be held on February 22-25, 2009, in Washington, DC, is the annual meeting of social justice ministry leaders from national Catholic organizations and dioceses throughout the nation. The meeting includes inspiring prayer and worship, challenging speakers, and social ministry strategy sessions. In addition, participants receive detailed briefings on priority peace and justice issues especially as they affect the poor and vulnerable. A highlight of the meeting involves bringing a common Catholic message on these issues to our Senators and Representatives on Capitol Hill. March is Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities (MR/DD) Awareness Month

The National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) facilitates the implementation of the Pastoral Statement of U.S. Catholic Bishops on People with Disabilities by calling for inclusion of people with disabilities in the life of the church and the community. To view NCPD’s website, go to

April is Autism Awareness Month 

April 10 – Good Friday – Downtown Walking Stations of the Cross

The many facets of faith and justice will be the focus of the annual Walking Stations of the Cross. The event is cosponsored by the diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry and the Office for Social Concerns. The walk will begin with an opening prayer at St. Joseph Cathedral, 212 East Broad Street, Columbus, at 8 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2009. Participants will stop at locations throughout downtown Columbus to recognize Jesus Christ’s suffering and crucifixion as well as reflect on a current area of social concern.
