Marriage Preparation

It is the desire of the Catholic Church
to be present and accompany couples
from the time they begin marriage preparation
and continuing throughout all the phases of life.

From “Family, Become What You Are!”
A Message from the Bishops of the Church in America, 2004

The Church of the Diocese of Columbus supports you in your commitment to a faithful and lifelong Christian marriage.  We want to help you deepen the qualities and develop the skills that promote a loving relationship of mutuality and interdependence.

It is with an understanding of the richness and beauty of the Sacrament of Matrimony that the Church seeks to demonstrate that thorough preparation in combination with your own love, good intentions, and realistic expectations provides the strongest foundation for the happy and lasting relationship you desire.

The Overwhelming Evidence that Marriage Preparation Works:

“The peer reviewed social science journal articles provide ample evidence that marriage education, training, and counseling programs, some of which have been around for more than 30 years, significantly strengthen marriage. These studies, which integrate findings from well over 100 separate evaluations, show that a wide variety of marriage programs can

reduce strife
improve communication
increase parenting skills
increase stability
and enhance marital happiness.

This research demonstrates that marriage programs are effective and makes the case that marriages can do more than merely survive: they can also thrive when couples learn the skills to make their relationship work.
