There are some questions you may want to ask yourself:
• How is God calling me to a special life of service in the church?
• If you are married, have you discussed this with your wife?
• If you are married, how will it affect her life and your marriage?
• If you have children, how will it affect them?
• Are you doing diaconal ministry now?
• How many years of study and formation are needed to become an ordained deacon?
Asking questions like these is often the beginning of discernment. You will find it helpful to talk to your pastor or another deacon who has gone through this discernment process. Prayer and spiritual direction are also an integral part of the journey. If you feel you might be called to the diaconate, I would be happy to have the opportunity to speak with you.
