Lenten Food Drive
Hunger Hurts!

Help respond to the critical food shortage!

(Note:  Check the expiration dates.  No outdated canned goods, please!)

This diocesan-wide food drive request is for donations above and beyond your normal local food collections to respond to these difficult times.

Almost 30 years ago, Bishop Hermann recognized that hunger was increasing at a startling rate in our diocese and convened church and community leaders to figure out how to get more food to more hungry people. As a result of Bishop Hermann’s leadership, the Operation Feed food drive was launched in Franklin County and the issue of hunger became an important social justice issue throughout the diocese. During Lent, the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, in partnership with Mid-Ohio Foodbank’s Operation Feed, is stepping up to help meet today’s alarming demand for food in this very distressed economy.

During Lent, the Catholic Diocese of Columbus is stepping up to help meet today’s alarming demand for food in this very distressed economy. Please consider doing the following:
1.      Include information about supporting your area’s food bank in your parish bulletin (see below),
2.      Raise awareness about hunger and food insecurity as part of your homilies and weekly announcements,
3.      Include your area’s food bank, food pantries, and soup kitchens in your Intercessory Prayers during Lent,
4.      Provide a box in the church and/or school to collect donated canned items,
5.      Encourage prayer for those who are hungry and less fortunate.

Parishioners (individuals, families, students) should be encouraged to bring cans of food to leave after Mass or donate online to your area’s food bank (see below). If you have questions, please contact the diocesan Office for Social Concerns, 614-241-2540 or by email: socmailbox@colsdioc.org.
