Cathedral Book Shop

Established in 1948, the Shop was originally in a store front on Broad Street in downtown Columbus. Twenty-five years after its beginning, the shop moved to the newly renovated basement of St. Joseph's Cathedral. The downtown store moved from the Undercroft of the Cathedral to East Gay Street, across from the Catholic Center.  From Gay Street, it moved to 209 East Broad Street in Columbus.

At the point in time of continued growth of the capital city, a smaller satellite store was opened on the far east side in 1995 at 5277 Broad Street (St. Therese's Retreat Center). Its location near the outerbelt provided easy access and ample parking. In 2003, a store was opened at the Saints Peter & Paul Retreat Center southwest of Newark and Heath in Licking County.

The Cathedral Book Shop was a full service Catholic book store and gift shop, a non-profit retailer dedicated to meeting the needs of clergy, religious and laity.  Three locations acted as distribution points in the Central Ohio area.

The Cathedral of the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio is rich in history and tradition, and the Cathedral Book Shop played a part in that heritage.  On August 13, 2100, the Book Shop closed.

"After careful consideration of its budget and current trends in the retail industry, the Diocese of Columbus has decided to close its Cathedral Book Shops, which are located at 209 East Broad Street (main shop) and 5277 East Broad Street (east shop), both in Columbus."  read entire story
